Using the internet to make long-distance phone calls (a.k.a. VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol)

As a consumer:

• Keep your patches and antvirus software up to date.
• Be careful about what websites you visit. Some compromised websites will secretly download malware to your computer without ever asking your permission.
• Never open email attachments unless you are absolutely certain they are legitimate.
• Never "click here" on those emails claiming to come from your bank, credit card company, eBay, Paypal, or other institution asking for your private information. If in doubt about an email with a link to a website, launch your browser by hand and navigate to the website. Emails do not always come from where they claim and embedded links in email messages do not always point to where they claim.

If you are hosting an email server, website, ftp site, or other service exposed to the Internet

• Make sure you are behind an industrial strength firewall. Infrasupport will build you a great firewall. Other vendors also build credible firewall appliances. (Tooting our own horn, Infrasupport firewalls are obviously the best.)
• Keep your servers patched and antivirus signatures up to date.
• If you accept credit cards or keep other personal information, make sure you follow appropriate best practice guidelines.
• Consider using a DMZ network for your public facing web server(s).
• Encrypt your stored sensitive data.
• Use HTTPS (not HTTP) to encrypt transacations with your sensitive data.
• Store sensitive data on a separate server from the public facing web server.
• Study and implement the PCI (Payment Card Industry) guidelines.
